Steam page, testing and more improvements

This week I spent more time on improving the house placement performance. I reworked the terrain alignment below buildings which previously caused significant frame drops. By doing this over a period of frames the performance for that part is now acceptable while still leaving room for further improvements in the future. After a lot of testing I came to the conclusion that the vegetation masking in and around buildings is by far the biggest factor for the massive frame drops when a building is placed. Unfortunately I have not yet found a solution for this problem which means runtime building placement is still not 100% possible without noticeable frame drops. I’ll have to investigate this further in the coming weeks. For the time being I have reduced the vegetation density a bit to reduce the negative impact of the vegetation masking. At the end of the week I created and submitted the steam page for the game for review. Hopefully it passes the review and I can link it in the next devlog. Apart from a lot of testing and small improvements that was all I had time for this week.

Notable tasks this week:

  • Improved terrain alignment algorithm
  • Created and submitted the game’s steam page for review
  • Lots of performance testing for the upcoming new test build
  • Tested a variety of different buildings and how they feel
