Devlog - April 2nd 2023

Recreation of the settings/options menu asset

This week’s focus was on (re-)creating the new asset - the modular options/settings menu.

Things didn’t quite go as planned this week. To be frank, things went very differently. There is now very little code I wrote in the previous week still in the asset. I wasn’t really satisfied with the ease of use and how quickly a new menu could be created with the asset I created in the previous week. I don’t want to go into detail as to why this required a restart but essentially I hit a roadblock with the Unity editor which prevented me from modifying the original codebase in a way it would support the easier workflow I want to go for. Throughout the week I did several attempts on combining the ease of use and flexibility. It was probably my 4th or 5th attempt, closer to the end of the week, with which I was finally successful to get things working how I wanted them. I’m hopeful that this design will be the last but you can never be sure about potential roadblocks still coming up when it comes to Editor programming. I also built all the editor UI using Unity new UI system called UI Toolkit which makes it much easier to work with and make modification in the future. This is the same UI system I started using for the ingame UI. All the learning I did for that system in the past translated nicely and is making the design process quick and easy. The complete rework means that I have not really gotten to the point at which I can showcase the asset. I would have loved to showcase it in this week’s devlog but it has to wait until I was able to finalize the visuals again. If no further setbacks occur next week's devlog should contain the showcase. I also found out that review times from the Unity asset store team for new assets are currently closer to a month so I don’t think aiming for a release in April is realistic anymore. Of course the review process doesn’t really affect my plans for after submitting it for review but it’s worth a mention.

Notable tasks this week:

  • Recreated majority of the modular options/settings asset
